Watching for Falling Stars

This is the fourth in a series of articles I’m writing about the songs in apocrypha, a compilation album I am publishing on DMusic. It is meant to complement my Jamendo album, evolution.

Here’s what I did with my wife on our 3rd date:

We went on our first date on August 8, 1993. Now, I’ve always been into astronomy, and it so happened the Perseid Meteor Shower was supposed to be spectacular that year. We needed a place to watch with dark skies.

It so happened that, in 1993, my wife worked for a biological sciences center in Gainesville. It was out in the middle of nowhere–perfect. Only one problem, the neighbors . . . .

That is, this particular science center used to study alligators. They had ponds full of them. Behind fences, of course.  We were safe near the fish ponds.

Did you know that alligators can climb fences?

So, while we were watching the skies, I kept using the flashlight to scan the surrounding area. Suddenly, I saw these two red dots, far off in the distance, certainly in the middle of a pond, one that wasn’t supposed to have any alligators. When I beamed in that direction a few minutes later, the red dots were closer.

Time to leave.

So we went to the front of the building, which was on a little hill, and were safe. We watched the rest of the meteor shower, and only later did I learn: that little hill was a septic tank.
